Written by Lori Crowell

Sharon M. Antin-Kantrowitz, MS, RD, CDN is a nutritionist at South Ocean Care in Freeport, N.Y. She said a balanced diet is very important. It can help to control diabetes. And will help you get to and maintain a healthy weight. Being at a healthy weight can reduce your risk of diabetes. You’re also less likely to have complications from the disease.

Dr. Linotte Jean-Jeune is an internist at Nassau University Medical Center. Sometimes she sees diabetes patients who are overweight. She said exercise also helps patients lose weight, which is good for someone who has diabetes or prediabetes. It improves how your body processes sugar. Before starting an exercise program, check with your doctor. Be sure the exercise you choose is safe and the best for your type of diabetes.
